WEEKLY SKETCHBOOK ASSIGNMENTS
WEEK 1: ALL ABOUT ME
Fill at least one entire page of you sketchbook with sketches, clippings, colors, lyrics, etc. that are all about you! Think about items that represent you in some way. What is your favorite food? color? sport? Where are you from? Who is your family? What do you want to do when you grow up? What experiences make you YOU? You may use any medium you like - pens, pencils, markers, magazine clippings - it is entirely up to you.
WEEK 2: CHANGE THE MEANING OF THE WORD
Can you think of a word that conjures to mind a certain meaning, but when paired with an image the meaning changes entirely? For example what if I wrote the work "LEMON" but then added a picture of a broken down car? What if I wrote the word "GOAT" but then added a picture of Michael Jordan (argue if you will)? I want you to get creative and find one word that you can pair with an image that changes the meaning of the word. You may draw the image or cut and paste one in your sketchbook.
WEEK 3: SONG LYRICS, QUOTES, OR POETRY AS INSPIRATION
Using song lyrics, quotes, or poetry as inspiration, create a drawing on one entire page of your sketchbook. Explain how the images represent or were inspired by the song lyrics, quotes, or poetry. What did they make you feel? Think? Remember?
WEEK 4: GREETING CARD DESIGN
What holiday is coming up? You are to design a greeting card that you might find in the store. Your card must have both text and imagery. Think about lettering styles, colors, and the overall "feeling" you want to communicate through your card. Remember that consumers don't want to buy sloppily made cards, so neatness counts!
WEEK 5: DESIGN 4 PLAYING CARDS
Design 4 cards from a deck of cards (i.e. queen, king, jack, and joker). Take this opportunity to make your designs unique, yet united. What is your theme? What mediums are you going to use? Colors?
WEEK 6: DRAW SOMETHING SOOTHING
Think about what soothes you - sounds, smells, places, people, etc. Can you draw this feeling or recreate it through your drawing?
WEEK 7: FOOD LABELS
Food labels or Clothing tag- find examples to paste into book. Create a rough of the design understanding the layout. Now, design your own label for a clothing tag or a food label. Make the size, shape, and colors, fit with the product. For example, a jean pants tag would have five sides and have a fold. Consider the backside of the tag. What elements of design are important?
WEEK 8: ADVERTISEMENTS & LOGOS
Find one company whose advertisements have evolved over significant time (example- Chick-fil-a) Paste in an illustration of the company logo or advertisement. Then explain in 2 paragraphs why the ads have been successful. What is it about their design that visually appeals to people? Discuss in terms of elements and principles of Graphic Design
