Graphic Design I

Course Description:
This course is designed for the beginning or experienced art student desiring to enhance his or her artistic ability in graphic design and printmaking. Graphic Design I is a hands-on, project-oriented course in which students are given project assignments where a focus on technique as well as creation of ORIGINAL artworks is emphasized.
Project topics include:
• Digital Illustration & Relief Printing
• Pattern Design
• Vector Illustration & Hand Lettering
• Poster Design & Screen Printing
• Final Digital Portfolio 

Objectives:
  • ​​Display knowledge of the “Elements of Design”.
  • Display knowledge of the “Principles of Design” (composition)
  • Develop an appreciation of art through the use of aesthetic scanning sessions.
  • Develop problem solving skills in relationship to the visual arts.
  • Display knowledge of Printmaking.
  • Display knowledge of Calligraphy and Typography
  • Display knowledge of Adobe Illustrator

Course Overview:
Unit 1: Intro to Graphic Design and Elements of Art & Principles of Design (3 Classes)
Anchor Standard: Apply criteria to evaluate artistic work.
    Learning Targets: I can identify the elements of art and principles of design used in a work of art.
    Activity: Create a reference booklet that describes and exemplifies the elements & principles. 

Unit 2: Self Portrait Linocut (5 Classes)
Anchor Standard: Synthesize and relate knowledge and personal experiences to make art.
Anchor Standard: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.
Anchor Standard: Organize and develop artistic ideas and work.
Anchor Standard: Refine and complete artistic work. Reflect on, re-engage, revise, and refine works of art or design considering relevant traditional and contemporary criteria as well as personal artistic vision.
    Learning Targets: I can create a self portrait linocut using the elements & principles of art to make my work unique and interesting. 
    Activity: Sketch a self portrait using only positive and negative space (may use photo reference), then transfer to carving block. Carve out self portrait and print and edition of five. 

Unit 3: Name Illustration on Adobe Illustrator (5 Classes)
Anchor Standard: Synthesize and relate knowledge and personal experiences to make art.
Anchor Standard: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.
Anchor Standard: Organize and develop artistic ideas and work.
Anchor Standard: Refine and complete artistic work.Reflect on, re-engage, revise, and refine works of art or design considering relevant traditional and contemporary criteria as well as personal artistic vision.
    Learning Targets: I can I can create a digitized illustration on Adobe Illustrator using the elements & principles of art to make my work unique and interesting. 
    Activity: Create an illustration of their own name/personality in Adobe Illustrator. 

Unit 4: Block Print Pattern (4 Classes)
Anchor Standard: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.
Anchor Standard: Organize and develop artistic ideas and work.
Anchor Standard: Refine and complete artistic work.Reflect on, re-engage, revise, and refine works of art or design considering relevant traditional and contemporary criteria as well as personal artistic vision.
    Learning Targets: I can create a block printed pattern using the elements & principles of art to make my work unique and interesting. 
    Activity: Create a pattern to be printed using relief printmaking. 

Unit 5: Illustrator Pattern on Adobe Illustrator (4 Classes)
Anchor Standard: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.
Anchor Standard: Organize and develop artistic ideas and work.
Anchor Standard: Refine and complete artistic work.Reflect on, re-engage, revise, and refine works of art or design considering relevant traditional and contemporary criteria as well as personal artistic vision.
    Learning Targets: I can create a patter on Adobe Illustrator using the elements & principles of art to make my work unique and interesting. 
    Activity: Create a true repeat pattern on Adobe Illustrator.

Unit 6: Hand Lettering Poster (5 Classes)
Anchor Standard: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.
Anchor Standard: Organize and develop artistic ideas and work.
Anchor Standard: Refine and complete artistic work.Reflect on, re-engage, revise, and refine works of art or design considering relevant traditional and contemporary criteria as well as personal artistic vision.
    Learning Targets: I can create a hand-lettered poster using the elements & principles of art to make my work unique and interesting. 
    Activity: Create a poster using hand lettering and illustration. 

Unit 7: Pet Illustration in Adobe Illustrator (5 Classes)
Anchor Standard: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.
Anchor Standard: Organize and develop artistic ideas and work.
Anchor Standard: Refine and complete artistic work.Reflect on, re-engage, revise, and refine works of art or design considering relevant traditional and contemporary criteria as well as personal artistic vision.
    Learning Targets: I can create a vector portrait of an animal on Adobe Illustrator using the elements & principles of art to make my work unique and interesting. 
    Activity: Create a vector portrait of an animal on Adobe Illustrator. 

Unit 8: T-Shirt Silkscreen Printing (5 Classes)
Anchor Standard: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.
Anchor Standard: Organize and develop artistic ideas and work.
Anchor Standard: Refine and complete artistic work.Reflect on, re-engage, revise, and refine works of art or design considering relevant traditional and contemporary criteria as well as personal artistic vision.
    Learning Targets: I can create a screen printed T-shirt using the elements & principles of art to make my design unique and interesting. 
    Activity: Create a tee shirt of their own design using screen printing.

Unit 9: Poster Design (5 Classes)
Anchor Standard: Generate and conceptualize artistic ideas and work.
Anchor Standard: Organize and develop artistic ideas and work.
Anchor Standard: Refine and complete artistic work.Reflect on, re-engage, revise, and refine works of art or design considering relevant traditional and contemporary criteria as well as personal artistic vision.
    Learning Targets: I can create a poster on Adobe Illustrator using the elements & principles of art to make my work unique and interesting. 
    Activity: Create a poster using illustration and graphic design in Adobe Illustrator. 

Unit 10: Website Portfolio Presentations, Critiques & Finals (1 Class)
Anchor Standard: Develop and refine artistic techniques and work for presentation.
Anchor Standard: Convey meaning through the presentation of artistic work.
Anchor Standard: Perceive and analyze artistic work.
Anchor Standard: Interpret intent and meaning in artistic work.
Anchor Standard: Apply criteria to evaluate artistic work.
    Learning Targets: I can showcase, discuss, and write about my artwork.
    Activity: Create portfolios on WIX to showcase student work. Students will include photos of each project and written artist statements to communicate about their work. Students will present their portfolios to the class.
